People of the Windows Part 2: The Sunday School Class

Fannie Leonard and her Sunday school class of 8 teenage girls raised money for the Milton M. P. Church remodeling by staging a theatrical event and selling tickets, the proceeds of which were given to the trustees. As a result, their names were painted on a window on the East Wall.

The lives of most, but not all, of these girls would follow familiar trajectories of marriage in their teens and childbearing. Olivia Wright’s life would become obscure to us after 1930, and she would leave no children.

Fannie Leonard’s would follow a different course, one of physical pain and mental anguish, and ultimately separation from the church with which she was so engaged in her youth.
